Leadership V Management

These two words are tossed around in many church and non-profit circles. Is one more important than the other? Do both have a place? I would have to say that an organisation cannot have an effective leader without efficient managers. And efficient managers NEED effective leaders. Notice the two words I have used too, effective and efficient. One focuses on motivation, the other focuses on competency. An effective leader is one that motivates people to act. An efficient manager accomplishes much and can make the leader of the department/organisation more effective in driving the vision and purpose.
Warren Bennis in his book, On Becoming a Leader highlights the two differences. Which do you relate to with regards to the two types of positions?
Below is a comparative list of the two titles:
iPhone 4.0. What can the Church learn?
Today Apple released the news about the much anticipated iPhone 4.0. After watching the video what can one learn from the way Steve Jobs and his crew do to promote a product. Some would argue that what Apple does is just hype. Others would contest that everything Apple does is very intentional. What do you say?
My view after watching the video, is that Apple is simply a pioneer in stretching the power of imagination. Did this imagination start just last year, I doubt it. Facetime for example, reminds me of an episode of the JETSONS that I first saw over 25 years ago.
The future is now.
What can we learn from Apple?
iPad is taking off – Literally!
I just read on Engadet.com, that Australian low-cost airline, Jetsar, will be trialling the iPad as the preferred source of in-flight entertainment. What will this do for product branding for Apple.
Available for AUD$10 and on flights longer than 90mins, passengers can rent an iPad for the duration of the flight. Each iPad is pre-loaded with movies, TV programs, books, games, music, and music videos, so passengers are going to have an excellent choice of entertainment. One advantage of this method of delivery with programming is the in-flight system crashing mid-movie and having to reset the entire service. One can only imagine that each iPad will be uniquely fitted or modified to portray as property of Jetstar.
During the trial, Jetstar is equipping some domestic aircraft with 30 iPads to gauge passenger interest and demand. Data collected will be evaluated to see if the airline wants to roll this out fleet-wide later this year.
This also adds to the thought of what are other little treats companies and organisations willing to do in order to persuade people to experience their product.
Do it anyway
People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered; Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish ulterior motives; Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and true enemies; Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway.
~Mother Teresa
